Job Search Tips

Student worker in food services

1. Create a resume

  • Even if you don't have much work experience, you can still create a resume.
  • List any jobs you've held, as well as volunteering, extracurricular activities, and groups you've been involved in.
  • Highlight the skills and knowledge you bring to the table.
  • Keep it simple and specific. Use white paper and black ink, and make sure there are no misspellings.

2. Check job postings daily

  • Job listings change often, so take a moment each day to review our Current Vacant Positions.
  • Don't hesitate to email a department you're interested in, even if they don't have a current job posting.
  • Feel free to apply to multiple departments!

3. Follow us on Facebook

  • We post status updates when new job postings go live. Get immediate notifications of new openings by following us on Facebook.

4. Contact departments directly

  • You can apply directly to departments. Follow the instructions in their job postings.
  • Email your resume or request more information directly to the department you're interested in.
  • If you're inquiring about available positions, use the department’s general email and ask for the person responsible for hiring student employees.

5. Follow up on your applications

  • Don't assume departments will contact you after you apply.
  • If you haven't heard back after 7 to 10 days, reach out to the department to ask about the status of your application.

6. Availability during breaks

  • Let employers know if you'll be around during CMU's vacation periods (Summer, Winter, or Spring break).
  • Many employers look for student employees who are available during these times.

7. Duration at CMU

  • Tell employers how long you plan to be at Central Michigan University (3, 4, or 5 years).
  • Employers prefer to train employees who will be around for a few years.

8. Network with peers and professors

  • Talk to your classmates, professors, and advisors about job opportunities. They might know about potential openings.

9. Customize your applications

  • Tailor your resume and cover letter for each job application. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position you're applying for.

10. Practice interview skills

  • Prepare for interviews by practicing common interview questions and answers. Consider doing mock interviews with friends or Career Development Center.

11. Keep track of your applications

  • Maintain a spreadsheet or a list of the jobs you've applied for, including the dates and any follow-up actions. This helps you stay organized and ensures you don't miss any important deadlines.

12. Seek feedback

  • If you don't get a job, ask for feedback on your application or interview. This can help you improve for future opportunities.

13. Stay positive and persistent

  • Job searching can be challenging but staying positive and persistent is key. Keep applying and improving your skills, and eventually, you'll find the right opportunity.
