Our Psychiatry Residents take an active role in the interview process and selection of incoming residency class. They advocate for patients and access to quality care.  The residents experience a multicultural environment and diverse backgrounds while supporting each other's wellness.

Why did you choose CMU: I chose CMU because of the culture of the program and the patient population. I had a great experience as a student with our residents and faculty. You also get to work with patients from various backgrounds and see a wide range of psychopathologies in an underserved area.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: All things Harry Potter (Ravenclaw by house!), spending time with my family, drinking coffee, traveling, soccer, scrolling through too many streaming services, hosting hangouts/game nights with friends
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Trying new restaurants and coffee spots, going on hikes, exploring new cities

Why did you choose CMU: The residents here are friendly, welcoming, and very supportive. Saginaw has a large and diverse population that is great for training. There is an emphasis on support for residents and a good work-life balance. There continue to be new opportunities and improvements within the program year after year.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Health and fitness. Golf. Pickleball. Beach. Food. Movies. Dog parks and walks. Beekeeping.
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Grand Haven, and Holland. Lots of good food, great beaches, dog parks, and drinks.

Why did you choose CMU: On both the day of the resident social and interview, I fell in love with the culture at CMU. The sense of unity and understanding made me feel like my skills would be nurtured and that I'd be in an environment that would bring out the best in me.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Drawing, hiking, boating, fishing, and playing tennis
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Traveling up to the wineries in Traverse City, going to the cider mills, and visiting the coastal towns of Holland, Grand Haven, South Haven, and St. Joseph. I also love salmon fishing in Frankfort!

Why did you choose CMU: Strong program with great faculty and residents. Rotating through as a student exposed me to the various aspects of the program and its culture. The residency is continuing to grow and truly values resident feedback. CMU also offers MIDOCs positions. I’ve grown to like the area over the past couple of years as a student and look forward to continuing my career here.

Personal Hobbies/Interests: In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, spending quality time with my husband and family, playing card games, and unwinding with a good show on Netflix.

Why did you choose CMU: I chose CMU for the professional and personal opportunities offered here: I wanted to be a part of a program that felt like an extension of myself and where my co-residents felt like my family. This close-knit, supportive environment fostered by the residents, program director, and everyone else involved with the program makes this program feel supportive both professionally and personally as I train to become a psychiatrist.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Running, reading, writing, being out in nature, and watching the Minnesota Vikings! (originally from MN)
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Michigan reminds me a lot of where I'm from in Minnesota. While I am still exploring the area, I love being outside in nature, whether it be running or walking, or just enjoying the outdoors!

Why did you choose CMU: I chose CMU after a great audition experience where I felt supported, challenged, and genuinely welcomed by the faculty. CMU's close-knit community and commitment to patient care made it feel like the perfect place to grow, especially after moving to Michigan to be closer to family.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Reading, cooking, sketching, yoga, and pilates
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Berry picking in the summer, cider mills in the fall, movie nights in the winter, and gardening in the spring. I also love exploring new restaurants, especially around Metro Detroit!

Why did you choose CMU: As a medical student, I observed the residents be respected and valued as members of the patient care team. Attendings were never harsh but always willing to provide feedback and encouragement. Even as an M3, I was amazed at how included I was in patient care. Psychiatry can be mentally and emotionally taxing, so it was important to me to find a program that would allow me to feel comfortable making mistakes while also challenging me to push my limits.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Lifting weights at Coops Iron Works in Saginaw, playing basketball at the Saginaw YMCA, enjoying Taco Tuesday at Rio Luna on Bay Road, and losing at trivia at Baynes Apple Orchard in Freeland. I also watch an unhealthy amount of sports, always rooting for Detroit teams, CMU, and Max Verstappen!
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Going to Saginaw Spirit games at the Dow Events Center, enjoying the local Saginaw cuisine (Peter and Chia’s is a must try), going to CMU sporting events in Mount Pleasant, and enjoying the one-of-a-kind Lake Michigan beaches in Muskegon!

Why did you choose CMU: I chose CMU because it seemed like the faculty genuinely had the residents’ best interests at heart and listened to their feedback. The residents also appeared to be very supportive of one another and wanted to see each other succeed. Also, several faculty members had completed their residency at CMU, which spoke to the strength of the program. Since starting residency, I’ve found that the program has truly lived up to those initial impressions. On a personal level, the program is close to home.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Painting, tennis, running, being in the outdoors, traveling

Why did you choose CMU: When I found out I matched at CMU, I was extremely grateful to come back home and be so close to my friends and family. During my interview, it was clear that residents were genuinely happy, with manageable stress levels. The faculty were kind and approachable. I'm also excited to be at a program that has established TMS services.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy riding motorcycles, learning about different cultures and religions, and spending time with animals
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: During the fall, I ride up to the Tunnel of Trees. I also love to eat at Zehnder's in Frankenmuth with my family. One of my childhood friends has a cabin about an hour and a half north of Saginaw and I am hoping to spend more time there now that I'm so close!

Professional Career Interests: I am interested in providing general psychiatric services in the outpatient setting to rural and underserved areas. I am also interested in exploring peripartum and reproductive psychiatry and interventional psychiatry as potential future subspecializations.
Why did you choose CMU: I chose CMU because of a strong intuition that this was the right place for me and my family. Even before having a great interview experience I was confident in the training, experience, and support that I would receive at this program.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: I have many hobbies that I enjoy but my most common enjoyments are gaming with my family on Minecraft, experiencing new movies, gardening, cooking, and weightlifting.
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: I am a transplant from Alabama to Michigan and am still exploring the area. Despite this, I feel very at home and am enjoying the cooler weather, numerous waterways, and great parks for my children.
