Why study applied statistics?

Our master’s in applied statistics and analytics equips you with advanced skills to thrive in today’s data-driven world. You’ll build real-world expertise in applied statistics, data science, programming and predictive modeling—plus the communication and collaboration skills employers look for.

Coursework includes topics like data management, big data analytics and machine learning. Most classes feature semester-long research projects and many students present at our Student Research and Creative Endeavors Exhibition. Top projects have earned international recognition in SAS-sponsored competitions.

Through our partnership with the SAS Institute, you’ll be prepared to earn two certifications: the SAS Base Programming Certification and the Predictive Modeler Professional Certification.

Graduate teaching assistantships are available for qualified students with strong academic and teaching backgrounds.

Applied statistics highlights

As a student in our applied statistics and analytics master’s program, you’ll:

Accelerated master's in statistics

Save time and money when you earn an undergraduate degree AND a graduate degree in an accelerated master’s program. You may be able to double-count 12 credits.

By double-counting all 12 credits, domestic students save up to $3,324 and international students save up to $1,248.

    • Minimum GPA at time of application: 3.0 GPA of at least 15 credits at CMU.
    • Requirements to maintain eligibility: average of 3.0 and no E's in double-counted courses.

    If your GPA is lower than a 3.0 or you have fewer than 15 credits at CMU, you can still be considered for admission if you demonstrate why you are prepared to be successful in graduate coursework.

    You must have a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours completed before starting coursework in the accelerated M.S. in Applied Statistics and Analytics program. To take full advantage of the program, make sure you apply for admission before taking any of the double-counted courses listed below.

    • Up to 12 credits of the following courses can be double-counted:
      • STA 575, STA 582, STA 585, STA 589, STA 590, STA 591, STA 675, ITC 510
    • You'll select your double-counted courses with an advisor. Then, you'll count them towards both your undergraduate degree and your graduate degree – either for your major or as electives.

    After earning your bachelor's degree, you'll take at least 18 credits to complete the M.S. in Applied Statistics and Analytics. If you don't complete the 12 double-counted credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take the remaining courses as graduate credits to complete the 30-33 credits required for the M.S. in Applied Statistics and Analytics.

    The M.S. in Applied Statistics requires 30-33 credits. You may double-count 12 credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, leaving 18-21 credits remaining to complete your master's degree. If you don't complete all 12 double-counted credits before you finish your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take more credits to reach the 30-33 required for the M.S. in Applied Statistics and Analytics.
