Chemistry
Major, Minor

Chemistry program overview

Chemistry serves as a bridge across the natural sciences. It offers insights into biology, physics and engineering and forms the basis for understanding the behavior and interaction of substances at the molecular level. As a chemistry major or minor, you'll build a solid foundation in chemistry while developing laboratory, analytical and problem-solving skills.

CMU's chemistry major emphasizes hands-on experimentation and critical thinking, culminating in a faculty-guided udnergraduate research capstone. Graduates are primed and ready for exciting opportunities in further studies or careers across industry, research, healthcare and more.

What will I learn as a chemistry major

Starting with fundamental science and math courses, you'll explore your interests within the field of chemistry. Whether you're drawn to developing new medicines or advancing sustainability, this program offers the flexibility to pursue areas that interest you.

Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, you'll design and conduct experiments, analyze data and communicate your findings. You'll present your research through posters, theses and conferences, while preparing for advanced degrees or immediate career opportunities.

Our program is distinguished by its practical research opportunities and close faculty collaboration. With a history spanning 50 years, our unique capstone program has enabled students to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research nationally.

Highlights of a chemistry degre

As a chemistry major, you will:

  • Build a strong foundation in chemistry: Study core areas such as analytical, organic and physical chemistry with a balance of theory, quantitative reasoning and lab experience.
  • Choose your interests: If a particular area of chemistry sparks your interest, you can tailor your studies to focus on materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical technology or biochemistry.
