Our master's degree in engineering is uniquely interdisciplinary, bringing together expert faculty members from seven different engineering and technology programs to provide a comprehensive and collaborative learning environment. There is also an accelerated program for earning your bachelor's and master's in engineering – saving you time and money.

You'll choose one of two 30 credit-hour tracks and customize your degree to fit your career goals. Whether you want to move your engineering career forward or gain the experience and knowledge to excel in a doctoral program, our Master of Science in Engineering degree connects you to the future you want.

Plan A: Research & Thesis Track

Take a Directed Research in Engineering course and prepare your thesis alongside experienced faculty in your Thesis Research course. You'll then have 9 credit hours for engineering electives.

  • Best for: Students interested in R&D careers or pursuing a Ph.D.
  • Structure: 21 credits of Core/Research + 9 credits of Electives.
  • Focus: Hands-on thesis research under faculty mentorship.

Plan B: Professional Coursework Track

Choose 21 credit hours of electives in other disciplines and up to 3 hours from an online graduate course per semester.

  • Best for: Students seeking advanced technical skills for industry leadership.
  • Structure: 9 credits of Core + 21 credits of Electives.
  • Focus: Maximum flexibility to choose courses that match your industry interests.

    Accelerated master's in engineering

    The accelerated master’s in engineering helps you count classes that you take as an undergraduate toward your master’s degree, saving you time AND money. You may be able to double-count 9 credits.

    By double-counting all 9 credits, domestic students save up to $2,493 and international students save up to $936.

      • Minimum GPA at time of application: 3.0 GPA of at least 15 credits at CMU.
      • Requirements to maintain eligibility: average of 3.0 and no E's in double-counted courses.

      If your GPA is lower than a 3.0 or you have fewer than 15 credits at CMU, you can still be considered for admission if you demonstrate why you are prepared to be successful in graduate coursework.

      You must have a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours completed before starting coursework in the accelerated M.S. in engineering. To take full advantage of the program, make sure you apply for admission before taking any of the double-counted courses listed below.

      • Up to 9 credits of the following courses can be double-counted:
        • EGR 511, EGR 512, EGR 553, EGR 554, EGR 555, EGR 570, EGR 576, EGR 578, EGR 580, EGR 585, EGR 588, EGR 591, EGR 594, EGR 597 
      • You'll select your double-counted courses with an advisor. Then, you'll count them towards both your undergraduate degree and your graduate degree – either for your major or as electives.

      The M.S. in engineering requires 30 credits. You may double-count 9 credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, leaving 21 credits remaining to complete your master's degree. If you don't complete all 9 double-counted credits before you finish your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take more than 21 credits to reach the 30 credits required for the M.S. in engineering.

      Accelerated MS in Engineering

      The MS in Engineering 4+1 program allows students to graduate with their master's degree in engineering just one year after completing their undergraduate degree. This can save you over $2,000 in credit hours because you'll pay undergraduate prices for graduate-level courses.
