What will you learn in M.A. in History?

Traditional Master of Arts in History Degree

The traditional Master of Arts in History is a 30-hour program designed to be completed in two or three terms if you enroll full-time. Part-time students are equally welcome. Most classes are offered in the evenings and meet once a week in three-hour slots. You'll work closely with a faculty advisor in your historical field to craft a unique course of study, and there are possibilities for significant interdisciplinary work in cognate fields.

Tracks in Art History, Filmmaking, Museum Studies and Education

As a student in the traditional Master of Arts in History program, you can choose to designate 10 credit hours of courses to our Art History, Historian as Filmmaker, Museum Studies, or Education tracks.

Accelerated master's in history

Earn up to half your master’s degree while finishing your bachelor’s with accelerated M.A. in history. You'll save time and money by counting up to 15 credits toward both your bachelor's and master's degree.

By double-counting all 15 credits, domestic students save up to $4,155 and international students save up to $1,560.

    • Minimum GPA at time of application: 3.0 GPA of at least 15 credits at CMU.
    • Requirements to maintain eligibility: average of 3.0 and no E's in double-counted courses.

    If your GPA is lower than a 3.0 or you have fewer than 15 credits at CMU, you can still be considered for admission if you demonstrate why you are prepared to be successful in graduate coursework.

    You must have a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours completed before starting coursework in the accelerated master's in history. To take full advantage of the program, make sure you apply for admission before taking any of the double-counted courses listed below.

    • Up to 15 credits of the following courses can be double-counted:
      • up to 15 credits of the following: ANT 500, ANT 540; ART 580, ART 581, ART 582, ART 586, ART 589, ART 685, ART 686, ART 687; FRN 510, FRN 591, 597; GER 597; all MST 500 and 600-level courses except MST 620; PHL 518; PSC 514, PSC 515, PSC 516, PSC 520, PSC 5 22, PSC 551, PSC 590; SPN 591, SPN 597; any HST 500 or HST 600-level course.
    • You'll select your double-counted courses with an advisor. Then, you'll count them towards both your undergraduate degree and your graduate degree – either for your major or as electives.

    The master's in history requires 30 credits. You may double-count 15 credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, leaving 15 credits remaining to complete your master's degree. If you don't complete all 15 double-counted credits before you finish your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take more than 15 credits to reach the 30 credits required for the master's in history.

    Careers & Outcomes

    Our MA students graduate with the tools to become research historians and teachers at many levels. You may go on to earn a PhD or dive right into a job at a museum, a university or the government sector.
