This is a practice-based program, so you'll be involved with sports organization management throughout your program. Why This Program & What You'll Learn

A graduate degree in sport administration will prepare you for athletic coaching, sport management, or athletic administration roles. Our graduate students succeed in highly competitive internship opportunities. These include roles with the United States Olympic Committee, NASCAR, national teams, collegiate athletic departments, sport governing bodies, sports commissions, and various high school sports associations.

You'll benefit from interdisciplinary courses including social, psychological, historical, scientific and philosophical perspectives on sport.

The Department of Physical Education and Sport offers graduate and research assistantships to students in the Sports Administration program. Some students also secure a graduate assistantship with University Recreation, Athletics, CMU Events or Ticket Central. We offer graduate students a unique opportunity to pursue research, teaching, or a wide range of sport management responsibilities while pursuing their degrees.

Accelerated master's degree in sport administration

Earn up to half your master’s degree while finishing your bachelor’s with accelerated M.A. in sport administration! More savings, more expertise, less time. You may be able to double-count 18 credits.

By double-counting all 18 credits, domestic students save up to $4,986 and international students save up to $1,872.

    • Minimum GPA at time of application: 3.0 GPA of at least 15 credits at CMU.
    • Requirements to maintain eligibility: average of 3.0 and no E's in double-counted courses.

    If your GPA is lower than a 3.0 or you have fewer than 15 credits at CMU, you can still be considered for admission if you demonstrate why you are prepared to be successful in graduate coursework.

    You must have a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours completed before starting coursework in the accelerated master's in sport administration. To take full advantage of the program, make sure you apply for admission before taking any of the double-counted courses listed below.

    • Up to 18 credits of the following courses can be double-counted:
      • PES 564, PES 599, PES 602, PES 603, PES 610, PES 625, PES 635, PES 640, PES 645, PES 650, PES 665, PES 675
    • You'll select your double-counted courses with an advisor. Then, you'll count them towards both your undergraduate degree and your graduate degree – either for your major or as electives.

    The M.A. in sport administration requires 36-39 credits. You may double-count 18 credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, leaving 18-21 credits remaining to complete your master's degree. If you don't complete all 18 double-counted credits before you finish your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take more than 18-21 credits to reach the 36-39 credits required for the master's in sport administration.
