Our master's degree in mathematics

A master's degree in mathematics opens the door to a wide array of fascinating careers. Our M.A. program builds your problem-solving skills and expands on the tools you need to succeed, whether you plan to pursue doctoral studies or directly to work. We even have a series of courses specifically designed to prepare you to teach at a two-year college.

As a student earning a master's degree in mathematics, you’ll research alongside faculty who study everything from ethnomathematics to differential geometry and more. You can also present your work to your fellow graduate students or at our annual campus-wide research showcase.

You’ll have the option of completing a thesis or writing two papers and taking additional coursework, including a graduate student seminar. Either way, you’ll graduate with the tools to thrive in further study, a teaching position, or an industry job.

As a student earning a master's degree in mathematics at CMU, you can:

Accelerated master's in mathematics

Earn up to half your master’s degree while finishing your bachelor’s with an accelerated master’s in mathematics. You'll save time and money when you count up to 15 credits toward both your bachelor's and master's degree.

By double-counting all 15 credits, domestic students save up to $4,155 and international students save up to $1,560.

    • Minimum GPA at time of application: 3.0 cumulative GPA, and a 3.0 GPA in mathematics courses at the time you apply. 
    • Requirements to maintain eligibility: average of 3.0 and no E's in double-counted courses.

    If your GPA is lower than a 3.0 or you have fewer than 15 credits at CMU, you can still be considered for admission if you demonstrate why you are prepared to be successful in graduate coursework.

    You must have a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours completed before starting coursework in the accelerated master's in mathematics. To take full advantage of the program, make sure you apply for admission before taking any of the double-counted courses listed below.

    • Up to 15 credits of the following courses can be double-counted:
      • MTH 520, MTH 525, MTH 533, MTH 534, MTH 543, MTH 545, MTH 578, MTH 623, MTH 625, MTH 632, MTH 634, MTH 636, MTH 637, MTH 645, and STA 584 
    • You'll select your double-counted courses with an advisor. Then, you'll count them towards both your undergraduate degree and your graduate degree – either for your major or as electives.

    The M.A. in mathematics requires 30 credits. You may double-count 15 credits before finishing your bachelor's degree, leaving 15 credits remaining to complete your master's degree. If you don't complete all 15 double-counted credits before you finish your bachelor's degree, you'll need to take more than 15 credits to reach the 30 credits required for the M.A. in mathematics.
