Chalking is a transitory advertising and communication tool used by students, registered student organizations and other groups at Central Michigan University for non-commercial purposes. The University supports students, student groups and departments wishing to communicate messages via “chalking,” and requires adherence to the following:

  1. Chalking is allowed on horizontal sidewalks fully exposed to the weather elements; chalking is NOT allowed on brick paving surfaces, vertical surfaces, buildings, signs, walls, pillars, posts, benches, doors, planters, windows, trees, steps or light posts, etc.
  2. Chalking must be at least 20 feet from the entrance of any building.
  3. Chalk must be water-soluble. Spray chalk, paint, markets, and oil-based products are NOT permitted.
  4. The University reserves the right to clean and remove any chalking that does not comply with this policy (e.g., is not the appropriate distance from buildings; and/or is written with a non-permitted substance.) There will be a charge for removing chalking. The University also reserves the right to clean and remove any chalking that does not naturally disappear within a week.
  5. Chalking by any individual and/or business external to CMU is not allowed.

Central Michigan University reserves the right to make exceptions to modify or eliminate this policy and/or its content. This document supersedes all previous policies, procedures or guidelines related to this subject.
